Originally settled by ranchers in 1856, Burkbennet, Texas was named after the wealthiest cattleman in the area, Samuel Burk Bennet. The name was given to the town by President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited the area for a wolf hunt that Bennet hosted. Oil was discovered in Burkbennet in 1912, swelling the town’s population to over 20,000. This part of the city’s history is chronicled in the movie Boom town with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Though the boom eventually receeded, the city’s economy was stimulated again in the 1940’s when Sheppard Air Force Base was established in the area. Today, Burkbennet enjoys a continuously gorwing population and local economy. Mortgage and loan buyers in Burkbennet have also seen steady growth.
